Shoppers Brave Cold For Black Friday Bargains
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBS) ―
It's Black Friday, and shoppers once again braved the cold in their search for holiday bargains.
At the Best Buy in Jersey City, the line to get in was long and wrapped around the building. "There's a lot of people on this line for laptops, like HP laptops for $197. Normally it's $500 or $600," said Travis Cosom.
"It's freezing and it's cold," Kimberly Dawn laughed.
One man at the front of the line staked out his spot on Thanksgiving Day. "I was here yesterday since 12 o'clock in the afternoon."
With the crowds came tons of security. Police said they were to make sure there is no rushing or cutting.
"Security is every - police is here. I think we're pretty secure here," Cosom said.
"They have plenty of security here - they've taken good care of that," John Eaton, jersey city
Malls across the area have tightened up security. The Westfield Garden State Plaza in Bergen County has 120 real-time cameras watching shoppers' every move and keeping an eye on the parking lot.
"It gives us the ability in real time to monitor everything that's happening inside the mall and outside the mall," said Chief Richard Cary of Paramus Police. "If we had a problem, let's say at particular entrance or elevator, we could click on that and get a live view of what's taking place in that corridor or anywhere else."
Six months ago the Paramus PD started working with the mall, tapping into their closed circuit television system. It's the first of its kind partnership in the state.
