Store Owner Hits Alleged Shoplifter With Hammer

Teen In Critical Condition, Owner Charged

BROOKLYN (CBS) ― A store owner allegedly took the law into his own hands after an alleged shoplifter went into his store.

Just after 8:00 p.m. Sunday in East New York, according to officials, a 15-year-old boy who was possibly trying to steal something from the store got into an argument with the store's owner.

The store, Munchies Bodega, was partially under construction at the time.

Police said the store owner picked up a hammer, hitting the 15-year-old on the head. The boy was in critical condition at Brookdale Hospital Monday.

The owner was charged with felony assault.

Police did not say if the young man was also to face charges.
