NYC Boxer, Eleven Others KO'd In Cocaine Ring

29-Year-Old Spanish Harlem Fighter Arrested For Alleged Role In International Drug Circle

NEW YORK (AP) ― A professional boxer from Manhattan and 11 others have been arrested on charges of taking part in an international cocaine trafficking ring.

Prosecutors say the boxer is Edgar "El Chamaco" Santana, a 29-year-old junior welterweight whose Web site bills him as "The Pride of Spanish Harlem." They say he and the other suspects conspired to smuggle cocaine from Puerto Rico into New York.

Narcotics detectives arrested the suspects early Friday morning. The investigation, "Operation Special Delivery," resulted in the seizure of several pounds of cocaine and $450,000 cash.

The suspects are from Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Yonkers and Puerto Rico. Prosecutors say all are charged with counts related to sale and possession of cocaine. They were to appear in a Manhattan court later Friday.
