Officials say four firefighters sustained minor injuries and another person has been hospitalized for smoke inhalation at the site of a four-alarm fire in the Bronx that engulfed at least four houses.
A fire official said early Monday the blaze on Findlay Avenue was declared under control shortly after midnight, three hours after the first call.
Forty-five people were left homeless by the fire that broke out just after 9:20 p.m.
More than 200 firefighters responded to the fire. Fire marshals will investigate the cause of the blaze.
The officials says the fire started in one house and spread to adjacent buildings.
According Fire Chief Tom Wilkinson, the structure made putting out the fire difficult.
"It's a class-4 construction, which is a wood frame. And what happens is the fire mushrooms and then spreads horizontally to the other buildings," said Wilkinson.
The American Red Cross is finding temporary shelter for the 45 residents, including 15 children and one cat.
