Four family members, including a 2-year-old and his grandmother, are lucky to be alive and unharmed after a home invaders took them hostage at gunpoint inside their Tremont apartment Saturday night. Three young men are under arrest.
Police got a call from inside 505 East 184th Street of a robbery in progress.
"They came, kicked the door in, and put the guns in everybody's face," Anthony Rodriguez, a cousin of one of the victims, said.
Officers stormed into the building and up to the second floor apartment where three armed men were terrorizing a baby boy, father, mother, and grandmother.
As the cops moved down the hall, one man tried to run away. He is identified by police as one of the three suspects.
Police were able to get close enough to pull the mother and child from the scene of the crime. The father also escaped.
Still inside were the two remaining gunmen and the baby's grandmother.
Police could see into the apartment and saw a gun being held to the woman's head.
"They didn't want to go to jail, they held her hostage and it got crazy," Rodriguez said.
Police negotiators made phone contact with one of the suspects, convincing him and the other man to drop their guns into a bucket lowered from the roof. They were ordered to the floor and the grandmother's terrifying ordeal was over.
Police have all three suspects in custody, and a nervous neighborhood back to normal.
"Thank God nobody got hurt and everybody is alive," family friend Carlos Baez said. "We have to commend the police department for the work that they do."
The investigation is still underway. Police say they have recovered two guns at the scene.
