Judge Won't Throw Out Case Against Ex-Sen. Bruno

ALBANY, N.Y. (CBS) ― A federal judge has upheld a criminal indictment accusing former New York Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno of corruption during his tenure in state government.

U.S. District Judge Gary Sharpe on Friday handed down a 17-page ruling denying defense motions to derail or delay the case.

Among other accusations, the indictment alleges that Bruno used his position to steer contracts and grants to businesses that paid him at least $3 million from 1993 through 2006.

Bruno spokesman Kris Thompson says the former senator is "guilty of nothing."

Once the most powerful Republican in state politics, Bruno retired from the Legislature in July 2008 after more than a dozen years leading the state senate.

Bruno's trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 2.

After his retirement, Bruno became chief executive officer of CMA Consulting Services. CMA, an information technology consulting business based in the Albany County suburb of Latham, is headed by Kay McCabe Stafford, the widow of Republican Sen. Ronald Stafford.
