Father: Mystery Pill Shows Up In Burger King Meal
Phil Collura Is Demanding Answers After His Daughter Had To Be Hospitalized Due To Something She Ate
MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBS) ―
A Long Island girl ended up in the hospital Thursday night after eating a Burger King kids meal.
Police are investigating after her parents said she swallowed a suspicious substance.
"My wife and kids went to the drive-through at Burger King for dinner, got the macaroni and cheese meal. She said it tasted funny and that's it," said Phil Collura of Rockville Centre. "There was something disgusting in there."
Collura said at the bottom of the mac and cheese cup was what looked like a crushed pill.
His daughter said she felt sick so after a call to the pediatrician she was brought to Winthrop University Hospital.
"Right now she is doing okay. She is still here under observation, so we will see what happens," Collura said.
At the Merrick Road Burger King in Valley Stream investigators talked to the manager who told CBS 2 HD she never saw the so-called pill because the family left the drive-through line and never returned.
At no time was the restaurant closed as police looked in to what the pill was and how it got into the mac and cheese cup.
Collura said he wants the mystery solved and is willing take matters into his own hands.
"I'm going to try to figure out how to do a lab test to figure out what type of pill it is. The hospital can't do anything right now other than observe," Collura said.
Burger King Corp. e-mailed CBS 2 HD with a statement late Thursday evening, saying: "Burger King Corp. and its franchisee is aware of this situation and is investigating the matter. As a precaution, the restaurant has removed the product."
As for that mystery substance, CBS 2 HD was told by Nassau County Police that a sample of it is now at the police lab.
