Cardinal Egan To Answer 'No Confidence' Letter
by Tamsen Fadal
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
Cardinal Edward Egan is expected to respond to a letter that has been circulated by a group of priests questioning his leadership.
"The Journal News" broke the story last week, quoting the group that calls themselves "A Committee of Concerned Clergy."
They have circulated an anonymous letter stating, in part, "During the last six years, the cardinal's relations with the priests of New York have been defined by dishonesty, deception, disinterest and disregard.
"Far too many of our brothers can speak personally of the arrogant and cavalier manner in which they have been treated by the cardinal."
As the cardinal approaches the age of retirement, the group is encouraging priests to make their feelings known by casting secret ballots of no confidence, confidence or abstention at their next regional meeting, with the results being sent to the Vatican.
Upon his 75th birthday, which is April 2, the cardinal must submit a resignation letter to the Vatican, and the pope will decide whether to accept it.
Monday's meeting will take place a 1:00 p.m.
