NYPD Investigates Attack On Elderly Brooklyn Woman
by Jackie Hyland
BROOKLYN (CBS) ―
A steady stream of family and friends came to the Brooklyn home of Carmela Bocca DiFuoco Saturday to offer love and support after the 69-year-old woman who lives with and takes care of her 97-year-old bedridden mother is recovering from a brutal attack.
A mysterious man broke into her house and violently struck her in the back of the head around 9:30 p.m. Friday.
Family members said Carmela walked into her first floor kitchen when she came face to face with an intruder. He struck her three times with a blunt object before fleeing.
Carmela called her son while bleeding from her wounds. He is a police officer and ran to neighbors for help. She was taken to the hospital where she needed 27 staples in her head.
"Even with locked doors you are not safe," neighbor Edna Cataldo said.
Residents on 70th Street in Dyker Heights said it used to be a quiet community, but a couple of recent incidents have left many here on edge.
Neighbor Danny DiSanto said, "It's devastating. I have known these people for years." DiSanto lives three doors down from Carmela said in March he let a strange man into his home.
The man claimed he worked for the city and was there to check the water.
"I let him in he did not hurt us he took $2,000 in cash," he said.
The suspect was still at large as of Saturday evening.
