Body Wrapped In Garbage Bag Found In NYC Hotel

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Police are investigating the death of a young woman whose body was found inside a garbage bag in a midtown Manhattan hotel.

The woman's body was found in room 608 of the Carter Hotel on West 43rd Street. The victim was described as a blond-haired woman likely in her 20s, and probably from out of town.

Hotel staffers Thursday morning told CBS 2 a maid discovered a plastic garbage bag under the bed and called a manager, who reached down and felt a human leg through the plastic. Investigators arrived and secured the scene, before speaking to guests and staff and checking video from hotel security cameras.

Employees also told CBS 2 a man stayed in the room from August 17 until Wednesday. He had an Alabama driver's license and paid cash every day. Data from his electronic room key appeared to show an unusually high number of comings and goings from the room on August 28.

Police also discovered a woman's abandoned purse, though they didn't say whether it belonged to the victim.

After news of the discovery spread, some tourists checked out of the hotel in a hurry.

"I'm leaving. I'm staying in New Jersey for the rest of the time," said Nia Henson, a tourist from Denmark.

After less than three hours staying at the hotel, Niahm Ryan, a tourist from Toronto told a police officer she wanted a refund and a room somewhere else. "We find someone had been killed on the 6th floor. So our reaction was to get out of here," she said. "I'd sleep in Central Park before I'd sleep in here."

Police have not officially classified this as a homicide, but hotel workers and guests ask believe the body being wrapped in a bag makes it murder.

The Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy on the body to determine cause of death and whether or not it was a homicide.
