Theatre Program Shows Students The Great White Way
Setting The Stage For A New Way To Learn

NEW YORK (CBS) ―
When the traditional classroom blackboard gets boring, some teachers are finding that Broadway may be the best replacement and with the Tony Awards taking place this Sunday night, the spotlight is on The Great White Way.
The Theatre Development Funds offer two programs that give more than 5,000 students the opportunity to experience the art of live theater every year by bringing them to some of Broadway's most popular shows.
The Stage Doors Program (SDP) and Residency Arts Program (RAP) brings young, fresh faces to the audience of classics such as "Inherit the Wind" and "A Chorus Line."
Victoria Bailey, executive director of the Theatre Development Fund arranges for the children to see new hits as well. Recently, 950 students saw August Wilson's "Radio Golf."
"For almost all of them, it's the first time they've been to the theater, but we hope not the last," she said.
Scarsdale Middle School Teacher Jim Andreski is a fan of the programs. "Theatre teaches people to engage in dialogue. They're listening to dialogue and then they are having dialogue with each other," he said.
