Embattled Congressman Charles Rangel has more ethics problems tonight. There's millions of dollars in outside income and business transactions he apparently forgot to report on his financial disclosure forms.
Rangel, though, is hanging tough.
It may just be that Rangel is angling to use the "I just plumb forgot" defense. How else to explain how the 79-year-old Congressional powerhouse failed to report over $1 million in outside income and $3 million in business transactions as required by the House. They're lapses that are now under investigation by the Ethics Committee.
Was he willing to answer reporters' questions about it on Friday?
"I recognize that all of you have an obligation to ask questions knowing that there's none of you smart of enough to frame it in such a way that I'm going to respond," he told reporters.
All I can say is we tried.
"There have been questions raised in the press about money that you didn't report," asked CBS 2's Marcia Kramer. "I wonder if you'd like to comment about that."
Rangel: "Anyone else that would like to have the opportunity to be heard on camera?"
Reporter: "Why not just deny the allegations?"
Rangel: "OK. Anybody else?"
Reporter: "How does something like this get overlooked?"
Rangel: "OK. Anybody else?"
Reporter: "You seem troubled by our questions."
Rangel: "Anybody else?"
CBS 2's Kramer: "Have you decided not to answer a single question, sir?"
Rangel: "Well I thought I said that earlier."
In the district of the man who writes tax policy, constituents are concerned about Rangel's own fiscal issues.
"That's kind of skeevy," said Washington Heights resident Gilbert Briko.
Added Tracy King of Harlem: "Yeah, I find that troubling, of course."
The big question is when will the House Ethic Committee rule? It's already been looking at Rangel's problems for well over a year.
The new income and assets were disclosed by Rangel recently when he filed amended disclosure forms dating back to 2002.
