Report Questions Rangel's Dominican Villa

NEW YORK (AP) ― Rep. Charles Rangel has "only sporadically" declared rental income from a beachside villa he owns in the Dominican Republic, raising questions about his financial disclosures under federal regulations, according to a published report.

The New York Post reported Sunday that Rangel, who as chairman of the House Ways and Means committee is one of Congress's most powerful figures, has owned the "casita No. 412" at the Punta Cana Hotel for 20 years and regularly rented it out to tourists for $500 to $1,100 a day, depending on the season.

Federal law requires that members of Congress include such income on financial disclosure forms submitted annually to the clerk of the House of Representatives. Stiff penalties may result from failure to report.

The Post said that while the villa was rented to paying guests for the past two years, Rangel reported no income from it in 2006 and 2007.

A spokesman for the Harlem-based Democrat did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report.

The Post quoted Rangel as saying he had "not received any rental income" from the property. He also refused to comment on his investments in the resort, calling that "a private matter."
