With less than a month before New Jersey's June 2 primary, the race for governor has gotten nasty earlier than usual.
Republican Chris Christie went on the offensive with a YouTube ad highlighting GOP opponent Steve Lonegan's losing election record and showing Lonegan cursing while being filmed for a documentary.
Meanwhile, a conservative group called Freedom's Defense Fund started airing cable television ads attacking Christie for taking donations from lawyers he hand-picked for lucrative federal contracts while U.S. attorney.
Once considered a long shot to win the Republican primary, Lonegan is now within 10 percentage points of Christie in the polls.
Democrats are seizing on that and plan to help re-elect Gov. Jon S. Corzine by running preprimary advertisements targeting Christie. The idea is Lonegan would be easier to beat in a general election.
Christie was born in Newark and raised in Livingston. He has lived in New Jersey
his entire life.
