Funeral Set For Mt. Vernon Officer Slain By Cops

MT. VERNON, N.Y. (AP) ― Family, friends and fellow police officers are preparing to say a final farewell today to a Mount Vernon police officer shot dead by Westchester County police.

A funeral for Christopher Ridley is scheduled this morning at Grace Baptist Church in Mount Vernon. The 23-year-old officer was off-duty when he was shot January 25. He was apparently trying to subdue a suspect in a street fight in downtown White Plains.

Mourners poured into a local funeral home last night to pay their respects at Ridley's wake. Among the mourners were the parents of Sean Bell, an unarmed man killed by New York City police in 2006.

Bell's mother, Valerie, told reporters she urged Ridley's family to "stay strong."

Ridley has been posthumously promoted to detective.
