Fort Dix Terror Suspects Due In N.J. Court
by Magee Hickey
NEWARK, N.J. (CBS) ―
The six suspects accused of a terror plot to attack Fort Dix will be in court Friday morning facing a federal judge.
The government is expected to argue at the bail hearing Friday morning that all six men charged with plotting to massacre soldiers at Fort Dix pose a flight risk. Because they were all born outside of the United States, prosecutors say they should be held without bail.
Lawyers for the men, four of them ethnic Albanians from the former Yugoslavia, have already said they don't expect bail to be set at a level they could afford.
Authorities say the men were preparing to buy automatic weapons to use in an attack when they were arrested.
They targeted Fort Dix partly because one of them had delivered pizzas there and was familiar with the base. According to court papers, the objective was to kill "as many American soldiers as possible."
Senator Chuck Schumer wants a Defense Department investigation into the foiled plot, saying there are gaping holes in base security.
"To outsource security at a military base is a huge mistake because the outside contractors' goal first and foremost is to make a profit. And if they can cut corners by not fully checking their employees, they often do not," Schumer said.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds plan a spectacular show this weekend at the McGuire Air Force Base, which is located right next door to Fort Dix.
Thousand are expected to attend the air show.
"I've got two children, and they're going to be out there. And I wouldn't bring them out here if I thought they'd be in any danger," said Major James Greathouse, a member of the Thunderbirds team.
Elizabeth Kreft, also of the Thunderbirds, said: "Security measures are part of every air show."
Authorities say the six suspects took a training trip to the Poconos earlier this year, where they fired weapons and played paintball, apparently to prepare for the attack.
