A big development in the mysterious death of a Chappaqua woman has been kept under wraps, until now.
CBS 2 has confirmed police located a weapon not far from the scene of the Nov. 18 ambush that killed Peggy Perez-Olivo and injured her husband, disbarred attorney Carlos Perez-Olivo.
State Police divers found the handgun in Echo Lake, a short distance from the spot where Carlos Perez-Olivo claimed he was forced off the road while driving home from New York City.
Perez-Olivo told police a man burst into his Mitsubishi SUV and opened fire. Peggy Perez-Olivo died two days later from a gunshot wound to the head. Carlos Perez-Olivo suffered a minor wound to the abdomen.
When the lake was searched Nov. 22, police refused to say if anything of value was found.
But law enforcement sources have confirmed that a handgun was found that day, and it has been tested to see if it was used to shoot the victims.
New Castle police would not answer any questions about the recovery of the weapon, but one expert told CBS 2 the fact that divers found the weapon so quickly is significant.
"It would indicate to me that they received some information where this gun was," said Jason Capuano, a former detective who recently retired from the New Rochelle Police Department. "It certainly appears someone provided them a tip."
"It could be someone that saw someone stopping a car near Echo Lake, dumping something," Capuano said. "Or the tipster could of course also be someone who has direct knowledge of the crime."
Law enforcement sources refused to reveal results of the ballistics tests performed on the weapon found in the lake.
"That's the critical thing," said Capuano. "Is the gun tied to the shooting? And if so, can the gun be tied to any suspect?"
