'Coats For Clunkers' Once Again Back To Serve NYC

NY Cares Coat Drive: Donate An Old Coat To Needing Charity And You Can Get Money Towards A New One

NEW YORK (CBS) ― We've all heard of "cash for clunkers," but how about "coats for clunkers?"

It's all part of a new effort to get you to donate to charity and save money at the same time.

With the beginning of December come warm coats for the men of the Bowery Mission, donated through New York Cares.

"We have an awful lot of people who need to stay warm for the winter, and I hope they'll be able to get a chance to get a coat like I did," Louis Anderton said.

You can drop off a gently used coat, at any NYPD precinct, and countless locations throughout the City. They'll be given to men, women and children in need.

"This is a year when people out of work may have to choose between putting food on the table or buying their child a new coat, and we don't want anyone to have to make that choice," said Gary Bagley of New York Cares.

The company, Weatherproof, is donating 6,000 new coats to the drive and came up with "coats for clunkers" as added incentive.

"We think it's perfect timing with the economy the way it is, and a way to stimulate people to bring in their coats to help charity and get a big reward as a result of it," said Freddie Scollmack of Weatherproof.

The reward is a coupon worth $100 towards the purchase of one of six Weatherproof coats, which run around $130.

"This one for instance, come in with that coupon and go up on our Web site, and buy this coat for $29.99," Scollmack said.

Donate a coat at Rothmans in Union Square or Scarsdale, and you'll get $100 off an overcoat. Paragon Sports is giving donors $50 gloves for free.

There's also a gym that's waiving it's $200 enrollment fee, and a nail salon that's offering free manicures for coats.

New York Cares is hoping these incentives will encourage people to give, especially since coat donations were down 20 percent last year.

The coat drive runs through the end of the year, and "coats for clunkers" runs from Dec. 14-16. For all the details and a full list of companies participating, please click here and here.
