FDA Gives Home Conception Kit Green Light

Breakthrough Product May End Frustrated Couples' Woes

by Dr. Holly Phillips
NEW YORK (CBS) ― A new, promising development has arrived to help couples trying to have a baby.

On Thursday, the FDA gave the go-ahead for a first of its kind "at home conception kit."

The Conceivex Conception Kit is being touted as a "first step" for couples trying to become pregnant -- before spending thousands of dollars on fertility treatments.

More importantly, it can be used in the privacy of your own home.

"I think for those who are really just starting out who are monitoring their ovulation with an ovulation kit like this and using the cervical cap I think it serves a purpose," Dr. Daniel E. Stein of the Continuum Reproductive Center.

The conception kit includes tools to predict ovulation, semen collectors, pregnancy tests and the only FDA-cleared home-use cervical cap.

The cap brings semen in contact with the cervix for four to six hours, increasing the opportunity for fertilization at the most opportune time.

However, Dr. Stein, a reproductive specialist at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, has some reservations.

"This kit will not address so many aspects of infertility and it will give many couples, I think, a false sense of reassurance that they're treating themselves appropriately," Stein said.

Each element of the kit works together to address common male and female issues that interfere with conception including low sperm count, reduced sperm mobility -- or movement, a tilted cervix and ovulation timing.

"Generally, I would say that in terms of infertile couples you will find that about 40 percent of cases are solely due to a problem in a woman -- about 40 percent are solely due to a problem in a man and a good 20 percent -- combined factor," Stein said.

The Conceivex Conception Kit is designed to be used for up to three months to enhance a couple's chance of becoming pregnant, but if fertility problems persist, a visit to the doctor is in order.
