At City Hall, the champ and the challengers stepped up to the plate for the world's best known hot dog eating contest.
It's weigh-in day for Nathan's Famous annual eating fest. There's a lot more anticipation and anxiety than usual.
For six years in a row, he's been the top dog of hotdogs. But now a painful jaw ailment could put Takeru Kobayashi's Nathan's hotdog eating crown in jeopardy.
Digg This Story! On Tuesday morning at the weigh-in for the Fourth of July gorge-athon, the 170-pound Kobayashi told CBS 2 News through an interpreter that he's not sure if he'll be competing because of jaw arthritis -- not a good sign for a competitive eater.
The status of his jaw now?
"It's getting a little better and better each day," Kobayashi said through the interpreter.
But talking a little smack is Kobayashi's 215 pound rival, Joey Chestnut, who says his injury "ain't all that" and his days on top are numbered.
"Whether or not he's injured, we'll find out the day of the contest," Chestnut said. "It's a little suspicious, we're going to find out."
Five weeks ago, Chestnut broke Kobayashi's hotdog eating record. He ate 59.5 hotdogs in one sitting.
So, the stage is set for Wednesday in Coney Island.
Leave your table manners at the door.
"It's not going to be pretty, but we're definitely going to eat," Chestnut said.
