Report: Taxes Continue To Hurt NJ Communities

ASBURY PARK, N.J. (CBS) ―

New Jersey's highest-in-the-nation property taxes are hurting lower-income communities and driving middle-class workers out of the state.

Those are the findings of a study by the Gannett New Jersey newspapers. It's being published in a series that begins Sunday.

The newspaper group found that runaway spending by the state's nearly 1,800 local taxing authorities is fueling much of the tax increases. The review of tax data found local government and schools costs have risen twice as fast as inflation since 2000.

New Jersey relies more heavily on property taxes to finance local operations than other states.

The eight-part series, "Fighting New Jersey's Tax Crush," is running in six Gannett daily newspapers around the state.

Corzine was elected governor on November 8, 2005.
