Online Shoppers Find Huge Cyber Monday Bargains
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
Today is Cyber Monday, the official kickoff for the busy online retail season. As many as 80 percent of retailers are offering deep discounts, but how low can they go?
Kelli Grant with SmartMoney.com says online retailers have been planning their Cyber Monday promotions for months. Now cash-strapped shoppers in need of bargains will find thousands of phenomenal deals.
"Buy one get one 50% off," "33% off" and "Extra 20% off site-wide" are just the beginning of what some sites have to offer.
"Barnes and Noble had up to 40% off," Grant pointed out. "Macy's is doing up to 80% off some jewelry items and Toys R Us has 40 to 70% off on select toys."
Shopper Laney Cook on the Upper West Side got a 20 percent discount on Old Navy Cyber Monday morning.
Even better, experts say, is that sites are allowing consumers to stack savings with promotional codes and rebates. "Add on coupon code for free shipping and with an extra discount you can take a great deal and make it even better," Grant said.
But don't feel you have to get all your shopping done by the end of Cyber Monday. These online discounts, says Grant, will only get deeper as we get closer to the holidays. "In the coming weeks you may see deep disounts on high end name brand TV's and then on toys."
Which has consumers rethinking their plan to hit the mall and shop from the comfort of home instead.
"That sounds like a plan, you got my vote!" Harlem resident Karen Kates said.
To protect yourself from identity theft when shopping online, use secure shopping sites, don't use your debit card and never shop on a public computer.
