Car Entered Water Early Monday, Another Victim Died

BROOKLYN (CBS) ― Scuba divers and aviation units searched the Newtown Creek for survivors after a car plunged into the water early Monday morning.

Rescuers retrieved one man from the East River inlet, and sent him to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Another man inside the car has died. The medical examiner will pick up his body.

Witnesses recall hearing the car racing down Apollo St. at around 3:30 a.m. before barrelling through a fence at the end of the block and entering the water.

It is not yet known why the car was speeding. Officials are trying to get more information from the surviving victim.
