Correction Officer Gunned Down Inside His NY Home

BROOKLYN (CBS) ― A correction officer was the victim of a deadly shooting in East Flatbush, Brooklyn early Tuesday morning.

According to police, officer Ken Duncan was shot in the head inside the garage of his home during an altercation with armed intruders. Duncan was taken to Brookdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The incident happened around 3:30 a.m. in front of a garage attached to a residence at 8702 East 87th St. at Avenue A. Duncan had worked at the Manhattan Detention Center and was with corrections for 17 years.

The NYPD took two people into custody for questioning, but they were later released. No arrests have been made.

Police believe the motive for the shooting was attempted robbery.

The family of the 40-year-old officer was overcome with grief after the shooting.

"He was a very good guy who never bothered anybody. He was a very good human being," said Terrance Roland, a life long friend of Duncan's.

Duncan had gotten off work at central booking in Manhattan and went home to work on a friend's motorcycle in his garage. According to a witness, two men approached him and his friend.

Police said the two men attempted to steal their bikes. Gunfire was then exchanged and Duncan used his personal gun to defend himself.

"Kenny should be honored as someone who did something heroic and perhaps prevented further attacks this morning," said Correction Officers' Benevolent Association member Norman Seabrook. "He was a dynamic police officer, loved by many -- an 18-year veteran."

Duncan was shot in the head during the exchange, and despite life-saving efforts by paramedics, died on the way to the hospital.

"The mood is horrific, it's horrifying," said Seabrook.

Police say a gun was discovered where the two people taken in for questioning were picked up on Linden Boulevard.

"Now we have to concentrate on doing our jobs as opposed to taking a personal feeling about a person who is going to be coming through our system that has assassinated one of our members," said Seabrook.

Duncan leaves behind a son and a daughter.
