HealthWatch: New Approach To Eye Lifts

The 'Tear Trough' Procedure Is A Non-Surgical Option That Has Been Developed Right Here In New York City

NEW YORK (CBS) ― You can get a boost of youth in less than an hour. It's a non-surgical procedure that's all in the eyes.

The eyes are one of the first places to show signs of aging, so it's no surprise eye lifts are the third most common cosmetic surgery.

But now, thanks to a new procedure being pioneered right here in New York, eye opening results can be achieved without going under the knife.

"As I've gotten older, I've gotten increasingly darker circles under my eyes and it gives my face a tired look," patient Mary Novoa said.

Novoa wanted to perk up her eyes, but surgery seemed too extreme.

"I'm hoping this will make me look healthier and younger," Novoa said.

Novoa spoke to CBS 2 HD from the office of Manhattan plastic surgeon Dr. Haideh Hirmand for a new, non-surgical eye lift called the "tear trough" procedure.

"As we enter our 30s, we see a lot of fat loss under the skin, making the eye look tired and the skin sagging a little bit," Dr. Hirmand said.

Hirmand has pioneered the new procedure which uses fillers, massage and a blunt cannula instead of a needle to plump up the under-eye area.

Fillers have been used to add volume to parts of the face for quite a while now, but the delicate under-eye area was strictly off limits. Now, with the new tear trough procedure, that's no longer the case.

"It's just done under local anesthetic in the office and it takes a mere half an hour," Dr. Hirmand said.

There may be slight swelling and bruising for several days after the procedure, but the results last for more than a year.

"This procedure is not only precise and versatile, but it's also safe in that the chance of entering a vessel or injuring a nerve or the eye itself is completely eliminated," Dr. Hirmand said.

Novoa's results were instant.

"It was unbelievably simple. I didn't really feel anything and it was quick and I'm thrilled!" she said.

Her smile says it all.

"I love it," she said.

Another plus of the tear trough procedure is that it's reversible. An enzyme specific to the filler can be used to melt some away, so your results can be fine-tuned to perfection.
