Don't Blink Twice: Eyelash Extensions Are In

by Tamsen Fadal
NEW YORK (CBS) ― The way to a man's heart? Through his eyes.

Without blinking, women are shelling out hundreds of dollars to get a whole new look. Eyelash bars are not just for celebs anymore, they are now springing up all over the east coast. They're hot, hip and now easier to have than ever.

In the blink of an eye, you could be sport a whole new look, thanks to lash bars like Shu Uemura in Soho.

Eyelash expert, Soul Lee does about 100 lash extensions a month. Lee told CBS 2's Tamsen Fadal, "I make them as beautiful as I can by customizing for each customer."

She has a steady hand and steady list of clients, who are addicted to great lashes. The most demanding looks: JLo, Jolie and Jen! "Everybody has a different celebrity they love and they want to look like that," Lee says.

Depending where you go, extensions can vary in cost from $300 to Madonna's $10,000 diamond studded mink lashes.

The day CBS 2 went to watch the procedure, we met Emily Liu. It was her first time getting extensions. "I thought it was a very easy way to add a little glamour to my life. It's so difficult to do it myself, this is just an easy way to do it," Liu said.

Lee attaches a one lash to each hair with semi-permanent glue. The process takes about 90 minutes. "It has to be one hair at a time. You have to have about 40 to 50 if you do any less you are probably just wasting time and money. I work with what size you have," she said.

Surprisingly, the service is for low maintainance people who just want to get up and go everyday and don't want to fuss around putting on mascara and eyeliner.

What makes this better than a $3.00 box of drugstore lashes?

"You have to see if that's right for you. Most of the time it looks a little bit dramatic," Lee says.

Finally, Liu's lashes were done, and she loved them. "Because I felt every piece going on, I thought I would feel it more, it would be more noticeable and more fake looking. But it's definitely not at all, it's so natural," she said.

The extensions will last between four and six weeks. The glue is waterproof, so you can shower, swim and work out and turn heads whereever you go.
