A mother and daughter were killed in a raging fire in New Jersey that destroyed two homes and left more than a dozen people homeless.
The two-alarm fire broke out at a home South Burnett Street in East Orange Friday morning. Firefighters from Newark joined local firefighters at the scene to try and get the flames under control.
The flames were so intense, firefighters could only attack them from the outside.
Later, in the back of a first-floor apartment, the bodies of 56-year-old Donna Thompson and her 37-year-old daughter Ashone were discovered.
The flames jumped to two other homes but those families there were able to get out.
"What I have on is what I got, everything is gone, but my babies got out safely, hopefully got out okay. This is what I have. What a Thanksgiving," said fire victim Penny Freeman.
Firefighters still do not know the cause of the blaze.
