Jury Considers Fire Island NY Tourist Beating Case

RIVERHEAD (AP) ― A jury is now deciding whether a man visiting a Fire Island resort was beaten by a police officer who lost his temper or fell unconscious in a drunken stupor.

The Suffolk County jurors began deliberations in the trial of George Hesse shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Hesse, the former acting chief of Ocean Beach, N.Y., is charged with gang assault, reckless endangerment and conspiracy. A second officer is accused of failing to assist the tourist.

Samuel Gilberd had been issued a summons for littering in August 2005. As he left the police station he kicked the door. He admitted he was drunk at the time. That's when Hesse allegedly brought Gilberd back inside for a beating.
