Cop Gets Partial Acquittal In Fire Island Beating
RIVERHEAD (AP) ―
A jury has partially acquitted a police official from New York's Fire Island resort area who was accused of beating up a tourist.
It also has rejected most of the charges against an officer who was accused of covering up the August 2005 incident.
Deliberations resume Monday on the remaining charges.
The defense said the tourist from Manhattan fell while in a drunken stupor.
Acting Ocean Beach Police Chief George Hesse was acquitted Friday of second-degree assault, gang assault and other charges. Officer Arnold Hardman was acquitted of reckless endangerment, hindering prosecution and other charges.
Jurors are deadlocked on a third-degree assault charge against Hesse, and on a charge of official misconduct against both men.
Prosecutors had no comment.
