Officer Wakes Family As House Erupts In Flames
Residents Escape Without Injury
EAST ROCKAWAY, N.Y. (AP) ―
A Nassau County family is safe after an off-duty police officer saw smoke coming from their house and woke them up.
The officer was on his way home from work Sunday morning when he noticed smoke coming from a house on Oceanview Road in East Rockaway.
Nassau County authorities said he rang the bell and banged on the door until someone in the house woke up. The two adults and three teenagers in the house all escaped without injury.
The house sustained extensive damage. It took 75 firefighters to battle the blaze. The fire did not appear to be suspicious.
