Key Dates In N.J. Battle Over Gay Marriage

A decision is due Wednesday from New Jersey's highest court on the issue of gay marriage. Here are some of the major events leading to Wednesday's New Jersey Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage:
-- June 26, 2002: Seven gay couples file a lawsuit, known as Lewis v. Harris, asserting the state is acting unconstitutionally by not allowing them to marry.
-- Nov. 5, 2003: Superior Court Judge Linda Feinberg rules in favor of the state in Lewis v. Harris.
-- Nov. 18, 2003: The Supreme Judicial Court in Massachusetts makes that state the only one in the country to allow gay marriage.
-- Jan. 12, 2004: New Jersey becomes the fifth state to adopt a domestic partnership law, giving registered same-sex couples some of the benefits of marriage.
-- March 8, 2004: A gay couple in Asbury Park is married by the deputy mayor. Within hours, Attorney General Peter Harvey declares the marriage invalid.
-- July 10, 2004: Hundreds of New Jersey couples register as domestic partners on the first day they are able to do so.
-- Aug. 12, 2004: Gov. James E. McGreevey comes out as the nation's first openly gay governor and announces he will resign.
-- Nov. 2, 2004: Voters in 11 states adopt state constitutional amendments barring same-sex marriage.
-- June 14, 2005: In a split decision, a 3-member state appeals court rules in favor of the state in Lewis v. Harris.
-- Feb. 15, 2006: State Supreme Court hears arguments in Lewis v. Harris.
-- Sept. 19, 2006: McGreevey releases memoir, "The Confession." For the first time, he publicly supports gay marriage and says that his previous opposition was to protect his hidden sexuality.
-- Oct. 24, 2006: State Supreme Court scheduled to rule in Lewis v. Harris.
