New TV Ad: 'I'm Jon Corzine, And I Should Be Dead'

N.J. Gov. Launches New Commercial For Seatbelt Awareness

SLIDESHOW: N.J. Governor Seriously Hurt In Accident

by Magee Hickey
RIDGEFIELD, N.J. (CBS) ― Barely a month after he nearly died in a bad accident on the Garden State Parkway, Gov. Jon Corzine is trying to make amends for not wearing his seatbelt.

A new public service announcement has begun airing as part of a campaign urging everyone to buckle up. He puts his mistake quite bluntly in the ad: "I'm New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine, and I should be dead," he says.

That's the punchy opening line of the new PSA promoting seat belt use , launched just in time for the Memorial Day travel weekend.

Corzine worked with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration in producing the message after many, many mea culpas of his own.

When he left the hospital, Corzine apologized and voluntarily paid a $46 fine for violating state law by failing to buckle up as he rode in the front seat of his state trooper-driven SUV, which crashed on the Garden State Parkway.

The SUV was driving 91 miles per hour in a 65 miles per hour zone.

"I set a very poor example for a lot of young people," Corzine said at the hospital.

The slick PSA was taped May 15 at the governor's mansion in Princeton where he's recuperating.

After his opening pronouncement, the governor lists his injuries and thanks his doctor. He then closes with a blunt warning.

"I have to live with my mistake. You don't. Buckle up," he says.

"I think it's very important for everyone to wear seatbelts. We lost a family member who didn't. [Corzine] can get a lot of attention," said one New Jersey motorist.

The governor's announcements will run on television and on radio stations throughout our area.
