Man's Best Friend Goes Vertical In NYC
Dogs Take To The Air In Unique Athletic Competition
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
The dog days of summer may be over, but that didn't stop the high-flying summer fun at Bryant Park.
CBS 2 HD was there earlier and has more on the country's fastest growing dog sport.
Happy pups, happy peeps, lots of sun and amazing leaps.
"Dock Dogs is actually the fastest growing canine sport in America," said Grant Reeves, CEO of Dock Dogs. "
The two types of competition are big air, which is the long jump for dogs, and extreme vertical, where they jump up and grab a bumper out of the air
"(All breeds) are all good at it," said Tom Dropik, Dock Dogs trainer.
When asked if he ever gets tired of the smell of wet dog, Dropik joked, "That's a question for my wife."
So how hard can it be?
The sport is becoming so popular it's getting its own TV show beginning Oct. 4 on the Outdoor Channel. After 13 weeks of competition the biggest jumper wins a brand new lease on an SUV for one year.
An official with "Dock Dogs" tells CBS 2 HD the vertical jump record for a dog is 7 feet, 10 inches. The long jump record is 28-10.
