More than 150 vendors are hawking World Trade Center souvenirs and other goods near ground zero -- illegally.
Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer says much of the merchandise is counterfeit. That's what his staff found in the streets surrounding the 9/11 terror attack, based on an 11-day survey.
Stringer says it's not right to create what he calls "a carnival-like atmosphere" in a place that deserves dignity and respect, selling everything from NYPD caps to T-shirts and paper weights.
The streets immediately around the World Trade Center site are a "no vending" area, by law. Illegal vending is subject to a $50 fine.
