Health Officials Await Swine Flu Test Results

Officials Confirm 13 More Swine Flu Cases In NYC

NEW YORK (CBS) ― New York City health officials say they have found at least one person with swine flu who hadn't been to Mexico lately and isn't linked to a school that was the site of the biggest U.S. outbreak.

As of Saturday the city says 62 people have confirmed cases of the virus in the city. Another 17 cases are considered probable, although the real number of sick is likely much higher.

Health officials say 1,000 people connected to the St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens likely had swine flu.

The doors will open Monday, but will it be crowded at the freshly scrubbed and sanitized St. Francis Prep?

"I think I will have to go back," sophomore Tami Terzian says. "I mean, I think they've done a pretty good job cleaning it up."

Until this weekend, all cases in the state had connections either to the school or Mexico, but one person is now confirmed to have the illness with no known link to a cluster.

Authorities say the flu hasn't caused any serious illnesses in the city so far.

"We're now seeing a leveling off here in New York and around the country – let's hope it stays that way," Senator Charles Schumer says. "It's too early to breathe a sigh of relief, [but] so far the authorities are doing a good job and most everyone who got it has the mild version."

"It looks like we're getting through this in a nice way and I don't detect any fewer people in the subway or going into the stores or people canceling trips. The bottom line is, it is safe to come into the city and to go around and enjoy and work and get an education," Bloomberg said.

"The trend we have seen for the past week continues. Nearly all those who have contracted the H1N1 flu or who have had probable cases of the flu have had relatively mild cases and all have recovered or are recovering nicely," he said.

Bloomberg also noted that a recently hospitalized Pace University student suspected of having the virus had actually contracted the seasonal strain of the flu and has returned home.

"Just because you have the flu doesn't mean you have [swine] flu and we have no idea which percentage of cases are the seasonal flu versus this flu," he said.

CBS 2's Dave Carlin contributed to this report.
