Warm Winter Oddity: Dolphins Frolick In Hamptons

EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. (CBS/AP) ― The summer season in the Hamptons doesn't traditionally start until Memorial Day or later. But tell that to the dolphins who've been hanging out there this week.

Several dozen of the marine mammals have been spotted in bays and harbors off East Hampton and Shelter Island in the past several days.

Dolphins have been seen off Long Island before. But Kim Durham, who's with the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation, says it's "very unusual" to see this many dolphins and to see them stay for three days or more.

The foundation has used an underwater microphone to monitor the dolphins and make sure they're not in any distress. Durham says they're acting normally and seem healthy so far.

The East Hampton Town natural resources director says unseasonably warm water and robust schools of fish probably attracted the dolphins.
