Tropical Storm Hanna battered New Jersey with gusting winds and heavy rain Saturday.
Tropical storm Hanna was battering New Jersey on Saturday, causing the ocean to churn, winds to whip and sand to fly.
"We're blown away being blown away," said Seagirt resident Pat Brechka.
Some Seagirt residents came to the boardwalk to peek at, rather than retreat from, the storm. Andrew Flores and his friends were out by the lifeguard stand.
"Winds blowing up the sand, it stings, we didn't want to stay out there too long... no (our parents) don't know we're out here," Andrew Flores said.
They rode their bikes home as winds picked up so much more, a lifeguard took down the red flag before it blew away. "I hope nothing bad happens, we could be more prepared," resident Barbara Leparulo said.
Seagirt officials took Hanna very seriously. They remember the storm on Mother's Day that battered this beach.
"We tried to take a lesson from the May storm because it hit so quickly and without warning that we just did not want to wait this time. We wanted to react," said Jay Amberg, Seagirt lifeguard.
"Riding it out for the night are workers at Monmouth County's Emergency Operations center. They were maintaining lines of communication so emergency crews could respond quickly. The big concerns for the workers were high winds and flooding.
"We do have the opportunity for the wind and the trees and the powerlines coming down yeah it could be a long night," said Michael Oppegaard, Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator.
