Man Pleads Guilty In NY Mutilation Case
CANTON, N.Y. (CBS) ―
A 26-year-old upstate New York man has admitted torturing and mutilating another man, ending his trial as lawyers were preparing to pick a jury.
Harry Klages II pleaded guilty in St. Lawrence County Court to two counts of first-degree assault. He'll be sentenced to 38 years in prison as part of a plea deal.
Klages was ready to stand trial for first-degree attempted murder in the January 2008 attack on 51-year-old Andrew Lesperance, and was accused of slicing open his abdomen, mutilating his genitals and gouging both his eyes.
Lesperance lost an eye in the attack, but survived.
Prosecutors offered Klages a sentence of 18 years to life, but he agreed Tuesday to a flat 38 years because he feared his prior felony convictions could lead to more prison time.
