Hit-And-Run Driver Files Lawsuit Against NYPD, NYC
BROOKLYN (AP) ―
A New York City businessman claims police who seized his luxury car after he killed someone in a hit-and-run accident returned it in bad condition.
A Brooklyn lawsuit filed last week by Harry Shasho seeks $190,000 in damages from the city, police and prosecutors. It says they failed to safeguard his impounded Bentley.
A criminal complaint says Shasho fatally struck a pedestrian in October 2005. It says the impact dented the car and broke its windshield.
Shasho pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident without reporting it and was put on probation. His lawsuit claims the Bentley was in excellent condition when seized as evidence but was inoperable when returned.
A city spokeswoman says it's unfortunate Shasho is focused on the car instead of the tragic loss of life.
