Kelly: Brazen Attackers Still At Large

BROOKLYN (CBS) ― Officers Herman Yan and Russell Timoshenko were shot after an early-morning vechicle stop in Brooklyn early Monday morning.

While Yan is expected to survive, New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly described Timoshenko's condition as "extremely critical."

Below is the complete transcript from Kelly's news conference, during which he provided the latest on the investigation and the officers' conditions.

--
"In uniform, Police Officers Russell Timoshenko and Herman Yan were on routine patrol in the 71st Precinct at approximately 2:30 this morning. The officers detected by using the computer in their radio car that the black BMW X5 SUV in front of them had plates that belonged to another car.

Officers Yan and Timoshenko followed the vehicle traveling westbound on Lefferts Boulevard as it turned north onto Rogers Avenue. They signaled the driver of the SUV to pull over onto the right side of the street.

After exiting the patrol car, Officer Yan, who was driving, approached the BMW on the driver's side. Officer Timoshenko approached the right side, as is the appropriate procedure for a car stop.

It was then that someone inside the vehicle fired in the officers' direction, striking first Officer Timoshenko. Seeing his partner fall to the ground and hearing shots, Officer Yan returned fire. He was able to use his radio to call for help, but he too was hit with gunfire.

The vehicle fled northbound on Rogers Avenue. Detectives in the 71st Precinct, who were working in the vicinity, heard the shots and responded to the scene. They found both wounded officers and transported them here to Kings County Hospital, where they are being treated.

Officer Timoshenko sustained bullet wounds, as Mayor Bloomberg said, to the face and the neck. He is in extremely critical condition. Officer Yan was hit in the chest and left forearm. We have every reason to believe that his life was saved by this bulletproof vest. Here you can see the entry mark left right here [shows vest]. We believe the bullet is right below the entry point. He is in stable condition, as the mayor said, and he is expected to recover.

Since joining the police department last January, Officer Timoshenko has affected 15 arrests, three of them felonies. He is 23 years old, lives in Staten Island. In his three years with the department, Officer Yan has affected 36 arrests. He is 26 and lives in Brooklyn.

Both officers' families are here with us, and of course, our thoughts and prayers are with them.

The suspects for this brazen attack are still at large. The vehicle they were driving was discovered abandoned a few moments later at Lefferts Avenue and Kingston Avenue, again in the 71st Precinct.

Two .45-caliber shell casings were found inside the vehicle. NYPD investigators at the crime scene on Rogers Avenue recovered an additional two .45-caliber shell casings, and they are working as we speak to locate any witnesses or other information leading to the arrest of those responsible for this attack.

Of course we urge anyone with any information at all to call our tips hotline: 1-800-577-TIPS or our Cop Shot hotline: 1-800-COP-SHOT.

I want to thank the doctors here, as the Mayor has, at Kings County. They are always giving us the absolute top-notch service. They've taken excellent care of our officers, and along with all members of the New York City Police Department, I extend our deepest sympathy and support to the families of Officer Yan and Officer Timoshenko. Of course we're extremely grateful for their service."
