Super Tuesday: Democrats Head To The Polls
Sen. Obama Closing In On Sen. Clinton
HOBOKEN, N.J. (CBS) ―
As Democrats head to the polls on Super Tuesday, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has pulled even with Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) in key states, including New Jersey.
Both candidates raced through the final hours before Super Tuesday, with Obama in the hunt for New Jersey's 127 delegates after a new Quinnipiac poll showed him picking up 11 points since January 23. It's now Clinton 48, Obama 43.
The Illinois senator appeared at the Meadowlands with Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), Caroline Kennedy and actor Robert De Niro, making his first-ever speech at a political event.
The Superbowl imagery was everywhere.
"I think we should take heart Ted by the fact that sometimes the underdog pulls it out," Obama said.
Clinton appeared on the David Letterman show, and was all laughs and jokes, even when the TV talk show host tried to get serious about the possibility of Barack Obama as her running mate.
"I've been giving it careful consideration. It's really down to you and Regis," she said.
Earlier in the day, her tone was not so light-hearted. With contests in more than 20 states tightening with Obama, Clinton lost her composure in New Haven, publicly crying again as a New Haven public interest lawyer recalled working with her as a student in the 70s.
"I said I would not tear up. Already we're not on that path," she said.
