Salvage Yards, Warehouses, Thrift Shops Are Great Places To Find Incredible Deals
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
When it comes to furniture and even building supplies, there are big sales and deep discounts if you know where to look.
From salvage yards to warehouses to thrift shops, the thrifty and open-minded should target these as primary destinations for home makeovers. You can find discounts of 75 percent sometimes even higher at these places.
For salvage and surplus building materials, CBS 2 scoured Build It Green.
"We're part-way between a Goodwill and Home Depot, so we take in donations of unwanted building materials and them resell them to raise money for environmental initiatives," says Build It Green's Justin Green.
At the not-for-profit, you can find anything from $10 sinks $40 dollar doors to barely-used kitchen cabinets.
"We get them from demolitions; we get them from home renovations or building suppliers going out of business. We get them from hardware stores," says Green.
You may need to look past some dust, but the savings are substantial. Just remember: "Do your measurements of what kind of space you have to fill, but then come here with an open mind," says Green.
For furniture tried and true like the Salvation Army to the decorator's secret, "Housing Works" is a bargain-hunter's paradise. If you have a vision for vintage, CBS 2 found a gorgeous church pew, a steal at $200, and an old window with a new life as a mirror with copper finishing.
"I think vintage is a great opportunity to furnish. You have things that are quality made, they aren't going to be in the landfill, so you're actually rescuing something," says Interior Designer Robin Wilson.
Then it's on to warehouse outlets like ABC Carpet and Home, which boasts bountiful furniture finds at 30 to 75 percent off. And there's a lot to take in.
"Don't go in with an image of what you want because it might not be there, but there might be something better in the same size range," says Wilson.
And more tips when it comes to shopping in warehouses and salvage yards: check back frequently, there's is a pretty constant turnover of merchandise. And don't forget to haggle. You can generally count on paying at least 10 percent less!
