Dead Homeless Man May Have Been Dumped By Cop

Surveillance Video Could Solve Mystery In Rene Perez's Death

by Tony Aiello
MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. (CBS) ― CBS 2 has confirmed new details of the investigation into the death of a homeless vagrant in northern Westchester County.

Rene Perez died in late April from internal bleeding. He was found lying near-death on the side of Byram Lake Road in Bedford, shortly after he interacted with several Mount Kisco police officers.

Now, video from a surveillance camera at an estate is helping investigators piece together what happened that night.

The Bedford estate is owned by billionaire Nelson Peltz. It is ringed by several surveillance cameras, and is just a 90-second drive from where Perez was found.

Law enforcement sources told CBS 2 the surveillance camera video has been extensively enhanced and analyzed. The sources said the video confirms a Mount Kisco police car drove by the estate shortly before Perez was found injured just up the road.

Since no Mount Kisco officer admits to being that far outside the village that night, the video becomes a key piece of evidence. Investigators want to know if a Mount Kisco officer dumped Perez in that remote location.

The Mount Kisco village attorney told CBS2 investigators are keeping village officials in the dark, because the investigation is ongoing.

"Unfortunately, we're not aware of any information right now," said Whitney Singleton.

Investigators continue to review the surveillance video, and other evidence, trying to determine their next move.

The three officers who interacted with Perez that night have all been placed on modified duty.

Two of them, Sgt. Edward Dunnigan and Off. Edward Dwyer, went on another call shortly after seeing Perez at a local laundromat.

The third cop, Off. George Bubaris, had almost 30 minutes unaccounted for after interacting with Perez before he answered another call. Sources have said the actions of Bubaris that night are being closely scrutinized.

CBS 2 also has learned Bubaris has hired famed Manhattan defense attorney Ed Hayes to represent him.
