Officials: Bronx Hospital Made Blood Test Errors

NEW YORK (CBS) ― New York state health officials said a Bronx hospital will give new blood tests to more than 900 patients after an investigation found that a handful of them received inaccurate results last year.

State officials said the errors stemmed from the mislabeling of blood samples from six patients who were treated by outpatient clinics at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center.

Hospital spokesman Erroll Schneer says the hospital believes the errors were "isolated incidents." But Schneer said the hospital will retest as many as 920 patients who had been tested between April and December 2008 just to be safe.

State Health Department spokeswoman Claire Pospisil said officials were looking into whether the errors caused any patients to receive the wrong diagnosis or medication.

Bronx-Lebanon claims to be "the largest voluntary, not-for-profit health care system, serving the South and Central Bronx, with 958 beds at two major hospital divisions."
