1 Dead, 4 Critical After Home Explosion In N.J.

Emergency crews are on the scene of an explosion that has leveled a three-story house in Irvington, leaving one person dead and 4 people in critical condition.

Authorities said that the blast has sparked fires in adjacent homes and people may be trapped in the rubble.

The explosion near 21st Street and 20th Avenue occurred around 7:30 a.m. and left behind a strong gas odor.

Irvington Deputy Fire Chief Charles Weiss says people are reportedly trapped in the blast that neighbor Erica Holmes says shattered windows in her home.

The incident is under investigation, but at this time authorities are unable to get close enough to determine cause of the explosion because of flames.
