No Remorse From NJ Farmer Who Killed Bear, Cub

STILLWATER, N.J. (AP) ― There was no remorse from a dairy farmer who was fined in Sussex County more than $8,000 for killing a bear and her cub.

Jacob Westbrook V told a Municipal Court judge in Stillwater Wednesday that bears had damaged his crops in the past and he didn't expect the state to help.

The judge told Westbrook that he had decided to execute them. Westbrook replied that "execute is something you do to a human."

The mother bear had a radio collar that told state wildlife officials the animal was dead on New Year's Day. But biologists were surprised that the animal was still moving.

Westbrook admitted he tried to cover up the killing be sending the collar adrift down a river.

Westbrook pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawfully killing a black bear and other charges.
