N.J. Police Increase Illegal Immigrant Reporting
WOODBURY, N.J. (AP) ―
Local police departments are reporting more suspected illegal immigrants to federal authorities.
That's according to a report in the New York Times.
Under a directive last August by state Attorney General Anne Milgram, law enforcement authorities should ask about immigration status in felony arrests or drunken driving cases.
Suspected illegal immigrants are referred to federal authorities.
The directive came after a triple murder in Newark. One of the suspects is an illegal immigrant who was out on bail.
Many immigrants and activists have criticized the directive, saiding some local police are asking about immigration status during routine traffic stops.
They said immigrants are now more fearful of the police.
