Panel To Discuss Safety At Indian Point

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) ― A panel of 12 experts commissioned to look at safety issues at Indian Point nuclear power plant in New York is scheduled to meet tomorrow with the public.

The group was commissioned by the owner of the plant, Entergy Nuclear.

The company asked the panel to conduct an "independent safety evaluation" of the nuclear plant.

The plant is trying to extend its operating license until 2035.

The co-chairmen of the panel are Massachusetts Institute of Technology nuclear engineering professor Neil Todreas and retired chairman of the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations James T. Rhodas.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials will observe, but not participate, in the panel.

Members of the public can ask questions and offer opinions.
