Indian Point Siren System Plagued By Corrosion
BUCHANAN, N.Y.
The Indian Point nuclear power plant's problem-plagued new emergency siren system has a new woe: corrosion.
Plant representatives and federal regulators say signs of corrosion have appeared on some of the more than 150 new sirens. They are scheduled to be running by August to replace an existing system that has occasionally failed during testing.
A Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman says all the sirens will have to be examined and fixed before they can be cleared to operate.
A spokesman for Indian Point owner Entergy Nuclear says the repairs should not slow the timeline for finishing the new system. The proposed August 14 completion date is almost a year after the most recent of three missed deadlines.
The sirens are intended to alert residents within 10 miles to any major problem at the plant, in Buchanan.
