'Indiana Jones' Bank Robber Torments Cops On L.I.
Man Of Many Hats Has Hit 13 Banks, Including 5 In NYC
MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBS) ―
A bank robber with a flair for flamboyant disguises has resurfaced in our area and now police need your help. The middle aged man sports everything from turbans to fedoras.
The suspect has bee dressed with a black fedora in one robbery, and described as "Indiana Jones" in another. He's got a hat for every disguise.
The serial robber is on the loose on Long Island. CBS 2 HD has obtained video of one of his recent robbery attempts, at the Roslyn Savings Bank in New Hyde Park.
"The guy has worn a turban, Rabbinical-type hat, fisherman hat and Indiana Jones," said Nassau County Police Robbery Squad Det. Sgt. John Giambrone said.
Bank customer Mike Lane says, though theatrical, the public and police need to take this man seriously.
"He gets away with it, dressed like Indiana Jones , therefore you don't doubt it," Lane said.
Heather Plaut said she's annoyed at the irony of the suspected robber's method of operation.
"It's obviously terrible thinking a bad guy would take a good guy's cover," Plaut said.
Do you recognize the master of disguise?
He has robbed or attempted to rob 13 banks, carrying notes demanding money and threatening violence. He once told a teller he had a bomb. Another time he said he had liquid nerve gas. Those claims were bogus.
The robber has struck three times in Suffolk, five times in Nassau and five times in New York City.
"What always baffles me about any bank robber is that they think they're going to get away with it," customer Ira Thomas said.
Perhaps that won't be the case for much longer because the robbery squads from both Long Island counties and NYC are now saturating the region with photos of the suspect.
If you recognize the bank bandit, police ask you to call CrimeStoppers at 800-244-TIPS.
